Fixing Bluetooth weather connectivity problems

The Symptom:

The Bluetooth weather receiver will not connect to the iPAQ, even after cycling power to both devices and resetting the Ipaq.  The blue LED on the XM box blinks and never goes on steady.  When Anywhere Map is started, near the end of the startup splash screen, the blue LED on the weather box should come on steady.  If this does not happen, first go to File>Settings>WX Settings in Anywhere Map and tap on the XMWX button to be sure that XMWX is enabled.  If it is enabled, press the RELINK button to give it a chance to connect.  If the WX box links to the iPAQ, the blue LED on the WX box will go to a steady on condition.  If this doesn't happen, there may be a problem with the shortcut to the weather box in the Ipaq system software.

Bluetooth connection problems with the XM box are often caused by the shortcut for the XM box being damaged or corrupted somehow.  This is probably due to some sort of a bug in the iPAQ system software.

The Solution:

To use the dual-bluetooth XM box as supplied by Anywhere Map, one must first link the Computer to the weather box.  To do this one must create a network device shortcut in the Bluetooth manager of the iPAQ computer.   Shortcuts to Bluetooth network devices such as the WXWorx box are specific to the actual serial numbered box and if you ever change your box for any reason, you must create a new shortcut for the new box and delete the old shortcut.

Before you perform the following steps, be sure Anywhere Map and Pocket Plates are not running.  This is best done by inserting the stylus into the small hole in the base of the iPAQ and resetting it.  This insures that no applications are using the Bluetooth system.  Also be sure that the XM box you wish to link to is within range of the iPAQ and is powered up with the Bluetooth LED blinking.

Deleting the old shortcut (if it exists)

To create this shortcut, go to the Bluetooth manager screen of the iPAQ.  To find the Bluetooth manager:

  1. Tap Start, then Settings, then tap the Connections tab, then tap on Bluetooth Manager.  You will see a screen that says Bluetooth  My Shortcuts  If you have used a bluetooth XM device on your PDA before, you should see a shortcut listed that says:  XM BLUE: XM Data
  2. To delete the old shortcut, press and hold on the shortcut, and select Delete from the pop up menu.

Creating the new shortcut:

  1. Create the new shortcut by pressing NEW in the lower left corner of the Bluetooth manager My Shortcuts screen.  You will see a screen appear that is called the Bluetooth connection wizard.
  2. In the first screen of the wizard, select Explore a Bluetooth device (this should be the default selection).  Press NEXT.  After a pause, the next screen appears.
  3. In this screen, nearby Bluetooth devices are shown.  One of these should be labeled XM Blue and should have a blue question mark over it.  Tap on the XM blue icon.
  4. In the next screen it will show a box that says Service Selection  Tap on XM DATA in this box and press NEXT.
  5. The next screen says Shortcut created XM BLUE .  Tap the FINISH button and you are almost done.

Using the shortcut the first time (Important step)

It is necessary to connect to XM BLUE one time in the Bluetooth manager before other applications can use it.  To connect:

  1. Double tap on the XM BLUE: XM Data shortcut you just created in the My Shortcuts screen.
  2. The next screen says Bluetooth: Dial-up connection and Select a connection to use.  If you see the connection labeled XM in this list, double tap it and it should connect to the WxWorx box.  It is at this step that one can get the error message: No path could be found to the destination.  If this happens, see the section below by this title to work around this error.
  3. Next you will see the  network log on screen.  Simply hit CANCEL at this point.  Do NOT enter a username or password in this screen. You will get an error message saying Cancelled by user but everything is OK at this point and you have successfully set up the network shortcut.
  4. Now if you run Anywhere Map the Bluetooth system will start up normally and everything will work properly

What to do if you get the No path could be found to the destination error in step 3 above:

The connection named XM (actually the first dial up connection created in this specific computer, we always call it XM) cannot ever be deleted for some reason.  If the original XM connection was deleted, you can never use another connection by that name without wiping out the memory of the iPAQ and starting from a clean system. Fortunately, Anywhere Map doesn't care what the connection is called!  If you are getting this message chances are you have tried to create a new connection named XM in this screen.

  1. Tap OK to get rid of the message box that says "No path could be found..."
  2. Tap OK again in the box that says Connection failed.
  3. Double tap on the XM BLUE: XM Data shortcut again and when you see the screen that says Bluetooth: Dial-up connection and Select a connection to use  This time DO NOT use the connection called XM in the list, rather double tap on New Connection
  4. After selecting New Connection you will see a screen that says Bluetooth: New dial-up connection  You should enter the new connection name (XM2) into this box and press OK. DO NOT enter any phone numbers or area codes into the phone number section.
  5. After you enter the new connection name, press OK and you should see a brief message about connecting, followed by the Network log on screen.
  6. If you made it to the network log on screen, all is well.  Simply hit CANCEL at this point.  Do NOT enter a username or password in this screen. You will get an error message saying Cancelled by user but everything is OK at this point.
  7. Now if you run Anywhere Map the Bluetooth system will start up normally and everything will work.
