iPAQ 4700 won't power up or soft reset

If the iPAQ 4700 will not power up using the power switch and/or it will not soft reset, the first thing you should check is the battery door locking switches. The battery door lock is also a power interlock switch.

Looking at the bottom of the iPAQ, the battery door lock is to the lower left of the plug receptacle and the battery door release is to the lower right. If you have removed the battery, the release will automatically snap and hold the battery in place upon reinsertion and the battery will not fall out. However, UNLESS THE BATTERY LOCK SWITCH IS MOVED TO THE LEFT (LOCKED) POSITION, THE iPAQ WILL NOT START.

Simply move the battery lock switch to the left and the iPAQ will start normally.

iPaq wont power up or soft reset

This is a bad design. Just bumping the switch will turn it off. I took a sharp knife and trimmed the switch flush with the case so it cant be turned off by mistake.

Thanks for the tip! My 4700 wouldn't switch OFF or soft reset. Turned out the battery lock had slipped half off. Clicked it back to lock and all is well :) I was getting worried there for a while.
